MATE Rector Discusses Cooperation in Education, Research and Development and Innovation in Kyrgyzstan

Rector Dr. Csaba Gyuricza paid an official visit to the Kyrgyz National Agrarian University (KNAU) from 2-5 April 2025. The aim of the visit was to develop scientific and academic cooperation between the two educational institutions and to strengthen Hungarian-Kyrgyz relations in the field of agriculture and agricultural sciences. KNAU awarded an honorary doctorate to Dr. Csaba Gyuricza, Rector of KNAU, in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the development of agricultural sciences and higher education in agriculture.

During the visit, the MATE Rector met with Rysbek Nurgaziev, Rector of the KNAU, who stressed the key role of cooperation with the MATE for the further development of agricultural sciences in Kyrgyzstan. Dr. Csaba Gyuricza highlighted the importance of joint efforts between the two institutions in developing agricultural practices and promoting knowledge transfer.

During the meeting, Vice Rector for International Relations and Attractive of Investment Aijan Tolobekova presented the project in the field of seed production. Afterwards, Abdybek Asanaliev presented the projects implemented jointly with MATE, with a special focus on scientific cooperation in the Batken region.

A highlight of the visit was the signing of the agreement on the establishment of the Kyrgyz-Hungarian Center for Innovation in Agrarian Science and Education and the official opening of the research centre. The centre aims to promote joint research and development activities in the fields of sustainable agriculture, agrobiotechnology, seed production and intensive horticulture. The collaboration is planned to test Hungarian vegetable seeds (tomato, cucumber, watermelon and pepper) in different regions of Kyrgyzstan and to disseminate raspberry and black berry fruit varieties (Argonia) in Kyrgyzstan and Central Asia using in-vitro technologies, in collaboration with ZKI Zrt. under the auspices of MATE. This is a significant step towards strengthening scientific partnership and addressing agronomic challenges.

Dr. Csaba Gyuricza also met with the Minister of Education and Science, Dogdurkul Kendirbaeva, and the Minister of Water, Agriculture and Processing Industry, Bakyt Torobayev, to discuss the development perspectives of agro-education and science in the region.

During the visit to Kyrgyzstan, the parties also discussed the possibilities of expanding drought-tolerant crop production in the Batken region, the possibility of joint work in breeding high-quality beef cattle, the introduction of a dual degree programme for Master's students, and the extension of the Stipendium Hungaricum programme for KNAU students who wish to study at MATE.

The partnership between MATE and KNAU started in 2021 with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding and continued in 2023 with the extension of the cooperation through the 1st Kyrgyz-Hungarian Rectors' Forum. Joint efforts are addressing issues of food security, environmental sustainability and climate change.
