UNESCO - Al Fozan International Prize

Science has transformed the world we live in. It has led to longer life expectancy and better quality of life for much of the global population.

The COVID-19 pandemic has shown to the world the importance of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). Thanks to the Sciences and associated technologies, vaccines have been developed in record time. Schools have operated despite the lockdown. Youth has innovated to adapt to the pandemic. However, new challenges are arising every day, some of them with tragic consequences – climate change, biodiversity loss, the need for more inclusive growth, and the need to ensure peace and stability. For these questions, STEM has the answers. STEM is indeed an ally and an enabler in the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), especially those directly related to science:  poverty reduction, infrastructure development, education, gender equality, clean water and sanitation, affordable and clean energy, and the conservation and sustainable use of oceans, seas and marine resources.

The UNESCO - Al Fozan International Prize for the promotion of young scientists in STEM was created to strengthen STEM research, STEM education and international cooperation. The Prize will give recognition to achievements of young people that are conducive to socio-economic transformation and development on a global scale while also increasing the interest of young people, particularly girls and women, in science so as to promote gender equality, scientific literacy and the choice of a scientific career.
